presented by Dr. Flavio Villanustre & Arjuna Chala,

Synopsis:
— HPCC (High Performance Computing Cluster) is an open source
massive parallel-processing computing platform that solves
Big Data problems. An overview of the HPCC Systems architecture
and its major components including Thor, Roxie and ECL will be
presented along with how this platform compares to other big data
technologies like Hadoop. System requirements covering the
supported Linux distributions will be reviewed. Also included will
be a demo of how this platform can integrate with Pentaho
Spoon/Kettle for powerful data ETL capabilities.
Speaker Bios:
— Dr Flavio Villanustre —
– VP Infrastructure & Products, HPCC Systems and LexisNexis –
Flavio is the Vice President of Infrastructure and Products. In this
position, Flavio is responsible for Information and Physical Security,
overall infrastructure strategy and new product development.
Previously, Flavio was Director of Infrastructure for Seisint. Prior to
2001, Flavio served in a variety of roles at different companies
including Infrastructure, Information Security and Information
Technology. In addition to this, Villanustre has been involved with
the Opensource community for over 15 years through multiple
initiatives. Some of these include founding the first Linux User Group
in Buenos Aires (BALUG) in 1994, releasing several pieces of software
under different Opensource licenses, and evangelizing Opensource
to different audiences through conferences, training and education.

– Architect Integrations, HPCC Systems and LexisNexis –
Arjuna is responsible for providing strategic and technology direction
for the analytics and business intelligence components of the
HPCC platform.

Bio:
– Ron is a Principal Technical Architect at at&t, where he is responsible for IT
Infrastructure design for emerging services and network enablers. Prior to his
current position, Ron was an architect in the ITO organization. He has held
various positions in telecommunications, including IT Director at BellSouth
Advertising and Publishing, IT architect for video services and mobility,
Product Selection Manager, Product Manager, and various sales and sales
support management positions.
– Ron has extensive experience in mid-range servers (HP, Sun, IBM), Intel
based hardware (both Windows and Linux), as well as broad network
knowledge including TCP/IP and WAN transport (MPLS).
– Previous to his career in telecommunications, Ron was a programmer at
Burlington Industries. He is a graduate of N. C. State University with a
degree in Applied Mathematics and a minor in Computer Science.

Phone Hacking after Cap’n Crunch
as presented by the elusive and disarmingly charming Charles Shapiro
Synopsis:
— This will be a simple introduction to hacking your Android phone,
with live demo of a jailbreak and install of CyanogenMod on an HTC G1.
At no extra charge, It will include a semi-political discussion of why this
is a [very, very, very] Good Idea. At no time will my hands leave my wrists
(unless the wrists are cuffed by jack booted gestapo enforcers of the DMCA).
Come to share your experiences if you’ve already succeeded or failed at this.
bio:
— Charles Shapiro is a fan of fencing, gadgetry, juggling, gizmos,
beer brewing, obscure weaponry, radio control (in all it’s connotations),
and most anything else that the lesser world might consider “geek”.
Consistent to these avocations he has been a professional programmer
for over 14 years, specializing in C and Unix with a couple years of
C++, Perl and a plethora of Python in the mix. He can type faster than
most people can talk, is a Linux Lunacy Cruise alumnae, a liberty
minded friend of the EFF, an officially sanctioned Richard Stallman
impersonator for the FSF, and a seriously committed GNU Linux
zealot since 1996.

The feature presentation will be
Seat Belts and Airbags for Bash
with Michael Potter
Abstract:
– bash (and scripting languages in general) act as the glue that hold other
system components together. This presentation will focus on the underutilized
features of bash that are critical to building production quality scripts, Demos
will show you how to turn on options that expose the hidden timebombs in
the code.
– Turning these features on should be considered a requirement much like
turning on strict and warnings are considered a requirement for Perl.
– Much of the bash syntax is redundant; I will also explain which syntax to
use and which syntax to avoid.
– Knowledge of any of the common UNIX scripting languages will be sufficient
to attend this meeting. Scripters at all proficiency levels will get value from
attending this presentation. Although I do not address differences between
Korn shell and bash, much of what I talk about also applies to Korn shell.
– I developed this presentation after getting frustrated with bash’s default
behavior of continuing to process after an error occurred. I was determined
to find a way to make bash a more reliable language.

Bio:
– Michael has been working in IT since 1989 when he switched from
programming automotive embedded systems. Since that time he has
been involved in projects related to moving mainframe applications to
UNIX and Linux using open-source technologies.
– Recently Michael incorporated Tapp Solutions, LLC. A company
dedicated to serving the insurance industry with mobile, desktop and
web applications. Including handheld quote calculators and scanned
document handling.
