Welcome to the

Atlanta Linux Enthusiasts

Promoting Linux and Open Source Software Freedom in Atlanta Since 1994
Atlanta Linux Enthusiasts (ALE) is a diverse group of friendly people who enjoy the freedoms and benefits of GNU Linux Computing and Free Liberating Open Source Software technologies. From novices to network administrators, from smart phones to data centers, we strive to empower every information technology user with freely distributable software and to improve every computing environment with the superior security, functionality and flexibility of Open Source Operating System solutions. -- more about ALE --
For information about upcoming weekly and monthly meetings, please check the ALE Meetup Group Calendar. We do not, and never will, require anyone to sign up with Meetup (or any other service) to attend any of our meetings; we only use it as an additional platform to connect with others in the local Atlanta area who are also interested in Linux.

ALE CENTRAL MTG. — 7:30pm Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013

Filed at 11:17 am October 29, 2013 under by Ruscetta

I’m thrilled to announce that our ALE Central meeting for
7:30pm on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013 will be following our
traditional format and will be held at our long running
Room 1C venue at Emory Law School’s Gambrel Hall.
(but please see note below)**

Our Featured Presentation will be

Using OpenVPN in a Monitored World

presented by Brian MacLeod

Synopsis:
— If there’s one thing the government folks can’t stand, it
is lots of work for little reward. Most of us will never be
interesting targets, and while many would say we’re safe
because of that, it doesn’t hurt to help protect yourself in
whatever way you can.
— I hope to prepare anyone looking to add a little secure
networking with advice on deploying OpenVPN in ways
that help make it harder for your information stream to be
captured and sifted or otherwise subjected to unwarranted
and malicious access.

Bio:
— Brian MacLeod is a Systems Engineer at the Georgia
Institute of Technology, supporting research on high
performance computing resources with the Partnership
for Advanced Computing Environment (PACE) team.

============================
The meeting will be held at Emory Law School in our
usual Gambrel Hall, room 1C venue.
Our meeting time frame is 7:30pm to ~9:20pm
Directions to Emory Law School can be found at
http://ale.org/?page_id=2

**An important note that this will very likely be the last
time we will be able to host an ALE Central Meeting or
special event at this venue. Emory Law School’s newest
facilities management has decided to end the good will
policy of support for the wider local community and will
now be restricting facility use to Law School activities
exclusively.

Emory Law School, through the ongoing support and
involvement of ALE member Ben Chapman in their IT
department, has been generously providing ALE with
unused classroom space for meetings and special
events for more than ten years. We have been
exceptionally fortunate in receiving this long running
support for our organization and deeply appreciate
everyone at Emory Law School who has helped with
these arrangements over the years.

As we see more and more attacks against maintainers of data, it has prompted many people to move their data from the cloud to their own home server. However, this means learning the ins and outs of Linux server security. This talk is geared towards starting on the ground level and do the “low-hanging fruit” within Linux server security such as setup of services, using sudo & doing backups “The Right Way” along with the tools to complete the job.

ALE-NW @ SPSU MTG. for THIS Thurs., Oct 10, 7:30pm

The monthly ALE-NW@SPSU meeting is being held Thursday Oct 10th, 2013 at 7:30pm in room J-211 of the Atrium (J) building on the SPSU campus. This is an open meeting. Everyone is invited, students, non-students, old and young.

Topic: Setting Up a Linux Server
Presenter: Andy Griggs
Date: 10/10 @ 7:30p – 9:30p-ish
Where: SPSU J-211

Abstract:
We will cover the installation of a server operating system on dedicated server hardware. There are many points to consider when setting up a server to provide services to clients: hardware compatibility, server specifications – meet the needs of your clients, configuration management, storage, virtualization, etc. The discussion will be limited to a single server installation using CentOS, foregoing any discussion about security or configuration management. Once the installation is complete, we will briefly touch on setting up a LAMP server and a database server.

Bio:
Andy has been a Linux enthusiast for over 10 years, first installing in 1998 to set up a NAT box to share a DSL connection.  After taking a five year break, picked back up in 2003 and have been using Linux exclusively since 2005.  Several work projects are Linux backed, including an Asterisk server for the internal phone system, a Solaris Jumpstart server hosted on a Debian install, and several network testing servers with Linux as the base OS.  Andy is also the organizer of the GA 400 Linux user group on meetup.com.
