November’s topic will be LVM, Logical Volume Management. What it is, how it works, how to use it and when not to use it will be discussed. Additionally some “gotcha’s” that cause heartburn will be covered as well.
We will meet at 7:30 at the ALE-Central location.
It’s time for another ALE-Central meeting!
Your truly will discuss factors to consider when designing a Linux cluster for various types of needs. Cluster types include: web servers, database replication, file servers, HPC systems, and the most important type, backup servers.
As usual, we will meet at the ALE-Central location at 7:30, talk about stuff for about an hour and a half or so and then relocate to Meltons for post meeting snacks and libations.

ALE 2015 InstallFest
Visit the ALE InstallFest event page to learn more and sign up.
When: Saturday, September 12th 2015 from 10am until 5pm
Where: Near I-75 and South Loop 120 in Marietta, GA
What: Free Linux Disks and Free Installation Help. Cost = $0
What is Linux?
GNU/Linux is a free and open source software operating system for computers. It is commonly used instead of commercial Microsoft or Apple products There are very capable desktop and server versions of Linux all freely available. An InstallFest is a public outreach effort
by ALE volunteers.
Things are moving along on this. I (Jim Kinney) became the official organizer of the GA-400 site about a week ago. The folks at Meetup.com have been very helpful in the transition.
Some stuff that’s needed is a new banner. The old ALE banner is looking dated. Maybe it’s time to generate a new one – 960x160px. Got an offer to help from Jason (THANKS!!) so between the two of us we may have some to look in a a short time.
JD has been a huge help in wrangling/hijacking helping make this merger happen :-)Â Ever few days now I get a phone call or email from a new person looking at ALE because of the GA 400 group pointing them our way.
As soon as we figure out how, we will setup some sub groups to accommodate the growing distance between meeting – central, top-end, NW and now Southside. YAY!

A DIALOG: ALE in a Changing Internet Landscape
As we all know, the world of technology is changing in both good
and not so good ways. These changes are clearly being felt at ALE.
How can ALE continue to be relevant in a walled garden world of
Facebook and Hangouts and Meetups? Should the walled garden
be viewed as a new conquest?
Linux no longer has to struggle for recognition or relevance. ALE
has been part of the pointy end of the stick that has forced the
changes where Linux is now seen as not just a means to a cost
effective end but an essential element in all phases of electronic life.
Except for the desktop.
Apple is increasingly viewed as a viable desktop for schools and
personal use. They are making the push into business desktop uses
as well. Is this a good thing for the continued freedoms, and
responsibilities, that Linux systems offer?
Join in the discussion of ALE future and Linux changes. Please
bring a laptop, tablet or pen and paper. The meeting focus is not
just what can be done, but more importantly _who_ is going to
be doing it. The room seats 30. It needs to be standing room only
for this one.
