[ale] Hmmm....

Hopefully nothing nefarious was done to the BIOS or other chips.

Some viruses have been spread simply by dropping thumb drives in places IT types would find them. Most of IT types are curious and can’t resist trying to find out what is on that kind of thing even if they have no real use for it.

I have been Jim's Goodwill and that is how I came to have a Hadoop cluster in my house.

Speaking of Goodwill, it seems like they all will *take* PCs but few put any up for sale. I scored a couple of decently usable LCD monitors at the GW in Athens last year. The one in Macon has been the only one I've seen in the past few years that regularly puts PCs up for sale. One of my best scores lately was a quad Xeon Dell with hardware RAID; it was sitting on the pavement next to an electronics recycling trailer at the Dekalb government complex on Memorial Drive. There was nothing wrong with it other than its Windows installation which was quickly done away with.

More of a "please reuse my old stuff before I send it to Goodwill" than a swap. Or the reciprocal portion is a happy "Thanks!". :-)

I have never attended a meeting, owing more to social anxiety (and now distance) than any other factor. I like the idea of free old gear, but might a "swap" create a feeling of a reciprocal obligation to bring something to contribute? Might that not have the reverse effect, or at least negate any benefit?

Wondering if old hardware giveaways at ale meetings would boost attendance.

Thoughts on a hardware swap?
