Ah!

The lights go on in my puny little pea brain.  A little testing is in
order and I have an idea....a little testing has revealed a path and
will follow that after work tonight!

Ubuntu 10.10

There was some KDE daemon (or something to that effect) - cannot
remember at the moment - that fired up every time I started Evolution,
eating up all the resources and producing the same symptoms you have
described. 

Removing it cured it "auto-magically".
