You can download Excel with Firefox but can't do the check in/check out.
They may prevent you from doing the download if you're not doing the
check out.  Of course SharePoint/MOSS is made by M$ so its not
surprising they aren't interested in making it compatible with other
browsers.

Which is strange, because I had hoops to jump through, but I could use
Linux to download files from Sharepoint at my previous job.  

My current job reports the same Sharepoint version as we had before, so
I'm guessing there's a settings thing somewhere.  You'd think maximum
compatability would be a goal.  >shrug<
