Ned,
We tried winbind and found that it was really flaky. It enumerates the entire forest, which is nice, but it overwhelms windbind and it stops working. The only fix was to remove the machine from the domain, add it back and it would authenticate for a while and then die. Then we had to remove from the machine from the domain, rinse and repeat....
