I did a bit of web searching and found reported problems very similar to 
mine. The answers basically boiled down to: (1) check video settings in 
the BIOS, and (2) rework '/etc/xorg.conf' by hand. I'll start on those 
tracks, but would still appreciate the benefit of anyone's success 
resolving this.
