Certainly worth a try. I even have a Ubuntu-7.04 'live' CD or DVD sitting 
around - that might be fresh enough.

Failing all else, I have FC3 running the same display and sitting on the 
floor right next to the stumbling Dell. That's a known-working xorg.conf 
(plus some examples from my web search).

I'll report how it all ends up.
