[ale] startx won't start X but X, xdm will, what's wrong ? [see included err msg]

The err msg I'm getting is:

...after the start up screen flashes brightly, then closes...
BAD system call
and,    IceWM: using /home/~/.icewm for private configuration files

but there's no /home/~/.icewm file, though there is .ICEauthority which is empty

waiting for X server to shut down X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit
kill or server shutdown).

Xorg.0.log
    reports:
after the usual stuff about CID, local, and Speedo fonts could not be initialized
and that they were being removed from the list...

(==) TRIDENT(0): Write-combining range (0x0,0x1000) was already clear.
