[ale] startx won't start X but X, xdm will, what's wrong ? [see included err msg]

Have you tried creating the .icewm directory manually?  Are you using
the IceWM?  X will start without a window manager, as will XDM.  If
you are using IceWM, you may want to try reinstalling the package for
it.
