You know, that is an interesting point.  I hadn't really thought of that. 
It may well be a factor.  I attend Atlanta Java User Group (AJUG) 
regularly, though, and I cannot remember when we had a meeting that was 
much under 100 users.  Different groups with different focus, to be sure, 
but Java is certainly a standard part of IT life as well.  From what I 
hear AUUG still has pretty good attendance as well, but I have never 
been.
