I think you're right!

You can also run (on rpm-ased systems)

rpm -q --whatprovides /usr/bin/file

That gives you the rpm any file was installed from.

File is in its own package, I believe. On my fc2 machine, I have a package
named "file-4.07-4".

The man page says you can look on ftp://ftp.astron.com/pub/file for relases.
