I was once, only once, *told* that I was facing a 50% pay cut due to
downsizing (it was 2001 after all). Faced with that I negotiated an
honorable separation (from an Indian employer no less, and a good one at
that) and I took a few months of idle time (the key here is to do some
advanced financial planning). Afterwards I returned to work (four
months post 9-11) in the same (intimate) industry and have been
contently employed since. IMHO a 20% pay cut, for the salaries we are
asking for, is NOTHING. And should be offered, instead of asked for,
when the company you *depend* on faces financial difficulties.
