"efficiently" is the keyword!!  Secure is not synonymous with fast.  You 
can be fast or slow and still be secure.

Openoffice is not going to be fun on that beast!  Just like Word in 
MSoffice would be a pain.

Have you tried working in Lyx and converting to PDF?  Most professors 
would not balk at a PDF or shouldn't.

You could ask for a very small fast window manager.  Then layer a fast 
browser and Openoffice.  Use Pine or mutt for email.

Or best yet, can you get a beefier laptop if Openoffice is required?
