I would load the latest knoppix from CD with its latest kernel, plug
in the USB device and see if the chipset was identified and/or
mounted as a mass storage device before I did anything else. At
least find out which chipset its using and see if linux supports it
according to linux-usb.org, or whatever the url is.
If not, gphoto2 has support for lots and lots of cameras.
