[ale] USB pen drive killed?

That was the issue here - I went to a windows box and reformatted the pendrive 
and all is well, at least at home.  I will try again at work today.

Is it possible to format a pendrive with mkfs or similar tools?  I'd hate to 
need a M$ box just to repair bollixed USB drives....
