You might want to check out the Rio Karma (sorry dont know the URL (do a google search))... it's a 20GB HD-based player. It plays mp3,wma,ogg,and flac. It aslo has a really cool feature; an ethernet-jack in it's base that allows you to use it's web interface to upload mp3s to it. Last time I checked the price was $299 or $399, the same price as the 20GB iPod.

I always recommend SonicBlue's Rio line.  About the only thing they have in common with the ipod is that they play music, but there's a project called rioutil that supports many of them in Linux.  They only play MP3 and WMA, though, unless the side project to develop open-source firmware has had a breakthrough.  The solid-state players (S-series, etc.) are small, light, completely shock-proof, have upgradeable memory, and their battery life is incredible: my S10 gets 25-30 hours from a single AA cell!
