Need some info:

Type of network card and hub/switch/router.
More details on what network connection is going down, LAN or WAN
Are the cables verified good?
Have the cables been stepped on or crushed by heavy objects.
What ISP are you using?

It is _VERY_ rare for a full system upgrade to cause more problems than
it solves in the Linux world. Now a partial upgrade that has a mixed
mess of libs would show all sorts of headaches and not necessarily leave
bit-dribblings in the logs. 

I have seen a few cases where a device only barely worked with not good
drivers and when the drivers were fixed/upgraded, the device would fail
as it was truly out of specs and damaged.
