Pete,
First recheck your BIOS screens to make sure that both the hard drive
and the CD player are properly identified. Both should be listed by
name. Most modern Mobos come with two IDE plugs. You may need to plug
the HD into the first one (read the documentation) and the CD into the
second. Both should be plugged into the END connector on the cables --
and check that the hard drive is using an 80-wire cable and not the
older 40-wire. The two cables look almost exactly the same but the
newer ATA drives need the 80-wire cable. Also check that neither is
jumpered as a slave.
I am painfully aware of these pitfalls as I just went through this
agony a few weeks ago. My new case/mobo came with the older 40-wire
cable and nothing worked. I spent several hours troubleshooting the
mess.
