Cautionary point:  This 'test' is intended to be carried out at the rear of the monitor.  Bring your magnet anywhere close to the phosphor screen at the front, and the image will definitely change, quite possibly forever.  The magnet will deflect the scanning path of the electron beams, which, if done in excess, can burn the phosphor.

Kids will find this particularly fascinating.  I know I did :)  (but I never caused any damage)
