I had a similar problem when I upgraded my old Gateway (circa 7/97) to a
larger disk and the problems were solved when I got an upgraded ROM chip
added to the controller card (sent free of charge !) and I also had to
re-configure my BIOS settings. Apparently in the "old days " no one figured
on hard drives getting larger, so machines were made with several "limits",
and I think that one of them was at the 2.2 Gig mark... another was at
either the 6 or 8 GB mark. At first I only thought it was an OS problem,
but it turned out to be also a hardware problem. I hope that this helps
and good luck.

Subject: [ale] I can't get a 6.8 Gig HD recognized as being > 2Gig.....
Greetings !
I can't get my system to recognize that a Maxtor IDE 6.8Gig drive is
larger than 2 Gig no matter what I try.
I've tried using DOS, MaxBlast, manually entering it's CHS parameters
with PNP BIOS turned off, putting it on different controller, different
cable, and fdisk, among other things.
All help appreciated,
Courtney
