You can still stick things in the xinetd.conf file as well if 
you wish. Xinetd is much better than inetd: don't 
use the latter anymore if you can help it.

Another alternative to inetd is ucspi-tcp, which has 
an extremely ugly name but works pretty well. I've 
used both and don't recommend one over another, 
but I'd point new people to ucspi-tcp since it is 
more powerful, and people familiar with inetd to 
xinetd because, well, it's familiar. :)
