[ale] gimp text/locale

I've been having trouble for a while now with the locale settings.
i think i've got them fixed.
the only problem left is with the gimp.
all the menu text is replaced with little boxes.
how can this be fixed?
is it more of the locale settings or is there just a missing font.
If font, what do i need to add on a debian potato/sid?

all suggestions are appreciated.
