Looks like you 98 box is looking for a way out to an unknown network. Chances are you might be on an incorrect subnet comparitively speaking to your linux box and other 98 machine. By default, it will try every way possible to find the address you are requesting to ftp/telnet to. If it can't find it locally it will look to its internet connection. In your case it is a ppp connection. This is why your modem tries to make a connection.

ps. Check the subnet mask and or ip range you have set up for the new 98 box.

Ok, not really on track for this group. But..
I am running a Lynksys LAN using a four port hub. I just set up a new
98winbox this weekend and now every time I try to use telnet to connect to
my Linux box it tries to connect through my modem. Does anyone know how to
turn off this 'feature'? My old 98winbox works just fine. Also, does anyone
have any suggestions on what is available ( i.e. cheap ) that I could use
instead of telnet?
Thanks
Eric Brubakken
