[ale] newbie: modem configuration

This is really weird; it looks like chat can't open the modem 'cause
the pppd process has it locked. But that's inconsistent with the fact
that chat actually dials the phone...

Oh well. If you're using the "lock" option in your pppd option file,
remove it and see if that helps.
