Hi Dan,

   Try jed, it comes with an X version called xjed (just do make xjed from 
   the sources). It's a very good editor, with color syntax highliting,
   Emacs-like features; and configurable for all tastes and colors. It is not
   resource intensive, and uses the SLANG language (the same library used
   by dosemu). The author also wrote slrn (a news reader) and most (a more 
   replacement). The original site is space.mit.edu:/pub/davis/jed...
   
   BTW, Windows, dos and OS/2 versions are also available.
