LVM is more flexible, once you understand that the physical volumes are
entirely managed by lvm. It has better capability to mirror file systems
and to migrate extents onto larger media if needed. It has a bit of a
learning curve:
create a volume group using vgcreate (even if only single drive)
pvcreate the physical volume(s)
lvcreate logical volumes ( you may want create dedicated lvols for /,
/home, /boot, /tmp for example).
mkfs the file systems for each of these volume.
mkdir any needed mount points.
mount the file systems to the mount points.
make certain mounts are in /etc/fstab to reestablish after reboot.
If you are doing this with an initial install, much of this can be set up
as part of the install process.
Physical drive partitions with only / are subject to getting filled up@;$
halting the system. I would suggest using LVM for anything that is not a
quick temporary install.
