Ah, that distro with all the common software is a great idea.  Even if you don't need it all, it is a good way to kick the tires on all of them.
Also, as an XFCE fan, I approve of the choice there :)

I do not know if Andy Stewart is on this list, but he helped start the Worcester Linux User Group (WLUG) "way back when", and when he "retired" from that he started a Meetup group for Linux in the Worcester area.

Andy's second claim to fame (or maybe his first) is the fact he is an enthusiastic HAM that melded his love of Ham Radio with Linux and created a distribution of Ham oriented software that he updates about once every six months.
