When I was leaving DEC in 1999 one of the last things that happened to me was the engineering manager of the DEC Unix group taking me to the cafeteria and asking the question:
"When will Linux get to the point were we can migrate all of our customers to it and get rid of all our operating system engineers?"
I told him that I did not know when that would happen, but it would happen.
These days I would have a more nuanced answer.
