Back in the dawn of time I worked in the hotel industry. Because of various reasons use of smoke detectors in restaurant kitchens wasn't advisable. Instead they used rapid heat rise detectors. That might be a solution for home shops. On a quick check it appears those are available for home applications and are fairly cheap.

I have Simpli-Safe alarm monitoring, and my smoke/CO2 alarm and low-temp alarm are monitored. If I paid more, I could have it alert SMS to my phone..
now I just need to figure out how to keep the dogs still when the UPS person delivers a package.. well, maybe I don't really want that:)
