Slackware still uses wireless-tools v.29. V.30-pre9 is included in
almost all other major distributions but is still in a "beta" status.
It's possible something is unstable in 30-pre9 (there's good reason it's
been in beta for nearly as long as GNU/Hurd) and causing your problem.
Wireless-tools is pretty easy to build from source. Perhaps try building
an installing v.29 from source and see if the problem persists? The
source can be downloaded from HP's website[1].
