[ale] Interesting problem with Intel S1200BTSR MB

So the system _DOES_ boot OK but you have no console?

That sounds like a hardware conflict for the serial port. I have a vague
memory of some gear I poked at that had to have the bios console redirect
set to a non-working IO address even if it was disabled in order to not
squash the physical serial port. Serial port sharing didn't work. Very
fuzzy memory on this.

If you have the gear, certainly try looking at the wire level voltages and
see if they go dark when the OS starts up. That would be a sure sign of a
conflict. I don't recall if there's a flag for grub serial to force a share.
