[ale] Where to buy an SSL Certificate?

I know about the cert bundle stuff – I had to figure it out at the time. As I noted the issue was on an older system (read EOL – we’ve since moved off of that system).

When I ran into the problem a little research indicated that older bundles didn’t include them whereas newer ones did sometime between May 2011 (when it wasn’t in the Linux one) and May 2012 (when it was).

Sorry if anyone got the impression I was implying Digicert was a problem as that wasn’t my intention. I was saying because of the problem on a much older system I first became aware others were moving to Digicert.

By the way to see which bundle you’re using you can run “curl-config –ca”. In the issue I found I was able to resolve it by simply copying the bundle from a newer Linux system to the EOL UNIX system but giving it the path/name on the EOL system that “curl-confing –ca” had reported.

I've used DigiCert in the past and their support is superb. You can live chat with them on their web site and they will answer any question you have and/or will go back and research if needed and get back to you. They are actual SSL engineers and not just some low level 1 script followers.
For any CA that your software doesn't know about, you generally just need to configure the intermediate cert bundle along with your site's actual cert, and the cert should validate with no issues.

We’ve used Verisign (now part of Symantec) for a long time but on recent purchases have used Digicert apparently because they’re cheaper. I’ve also seen others we do business with go to Digicert. (It caused us a problem on an older system that didn’t know who Digicert was a year or so ago.)

Since I don’t do the actual purchases I can’t tell you what either charges.

I’m not sure if you can really do wildcard for certificates though – we typically have specific ones for our various websites.
