The last four notebook computers and the last five desktop class computers have all been some flavor of HP. They have all worked great for me.
My current primary notebook is an Hp Envy, which is a little pricey at slightly north of $800, but I got a low end discontinuing HP for about $400 for my son to use at school this summer.
The key things in my choices have been, is the price/perfomance/functionality meet my needs and, does everything work with the live trial usb stick work on it.
I've been using suse for my linux distro for years, and hardware compatibility has been one of the reasons I keep using it. That said, I couldn't imagine buying anything without being able to try it out with my distro in the store before I take it home.
My usual first stop is Costco for this. They have no restocking fees if I do have problem, unlike most other stores that sell computer related items

Ok, I love the Thinkpad and Elitebooks. But lets get something straight here. Both of those cost north of $1500. You can get a great ASUS for under $1k. Most under $750. That's why I mentioned it.
"He's not a techie, so compatibility is important. I think he uses it for basic things - pictures, email, web, etc" Most people that fall in this category can't fathom spending over $1000 for a laptop these days. That said, Most laptops these days have great compatibility with Linux.

I get a Lenovo ThinkPad, an HP Elitebook, and a Dell Latitude each year at work. They all work great. When you get into the consumer grade stuff, things can be trickier. For me, I found Ubuntu a little flakey (but improving) on how the BCM wireless is supported. It kept breaking with updates.
I switched that neighbor to Fedora, and she is happy with the low end laptop now.
