I get a Lenovo ThinkPad, an HP Elitebook, and a Dell Latitude each year at work. They all work great. When you get into the consumer grade stuff, things can be trickier. For me, I found Ubuntu a little flakey (but improving) on how the BCM wireless is supported. It kept breaking with updates.
I switched that neighbor to Fedora, and she is happy with the low end laptop now.
