Hi JD,

I'm not using Win8, but I access NTFS partitions all the time from Linux on my dual boot systems with Vista and Win 7 when they're booted into Linux. I thought the NTFS support for Linux was pretty solid. Can you elaborate on your last comment?

By the way, security patch support for Windows XP ends in something like 400 days. I would seriously consider getting Windows 7, while you still can, and putting it on your Mom's machine. Win 7 will no longer be available for sale after October. That way, you'll have support for it until 2020, if Microsoft is still around. That's what I did to my Dad's PC that was running Vista. I bought the Win 7 OEM software myself, since he's very tight on funds. It's in my best interest to avoid as many maintenance headaches for that machine as I can, and I cannot afford for him to get a virus if there's any way to prevent it. I know I could switch him to Linux, but he doesn't want to worry about it and I still haven't figured out specifically how to have what I consider to be a usable desktop environment, as discussed in other threads.

Sincerely,

Ron
