I'm not looking for a DRM flame war here; I hate Valve/Steam as much as anyone, but this is a fantastic opportunity to bring gamers over from Windows, especially since the god-awful Windows 8 is now the de facto OS on a new system.
I have no opinion on Valve/Steam; I am not much of a gamer. Overall this
is good news for Linux because a major game vendor says Linux is worth
supporting. As others follow the lead fewer people can not use the
lament "I can not run X on Linux".

My understanding of hardcore gamers is they like very powerful,
expensive rigs and the only reason most are tied to Windows is the
availability of game titles on non-Windows rigs. M$ can not be very
happy about this but my opinion is they did to themselves by not
understanding the different device markets and each markets OS
requirements with Windows 8.

An aside to the above, my marginally computer literate wife now
primarily uses Linux. She primarily surfs, plays Facebook games, and
reads email. Once she realized a Linux box could do these things she
started using Linux regularly and found she liked its stability and
generally much less aggravating nature.

Her primary use of Windows is a couple of applications that I have
tested on Wine but this use is infrequent.
