I highly recommend the instructors here and the facility itself, this
is where I trained (and will be retraining). They also hold bike
familiarity courses where you get to know a little more of what your
bike can do with you on it, and, as mentioned, they also have a dirt
course for those interested (watched kids learning the weekend I was
there).

I spend about $350 on my initial safety gear, and have been adding
here and there as I got a better feel for the ride and my usual
routes.  Definitely a helmet, sturdy (though not heavy) jacket, and
some gloves.  If you don't have a pair of boots that support your
ankles already, get them too (that's what kept my costs down); putting
your foot out to brace yourself is a natural reaction, and it's way to
easy to twist or jam your ankle without any support.

Denim is a minimum for the legs, and I concur about water protection
since it sounds like this will be the daily commuter. Beyond that
it'll really be up to you and your own comfort.
