[ale] Postgresql start issues

Last night we did some hardware maintenance on a server running Postgresql 9.1.3.
On trying to restart the DB afterwards we got:
LOG: peer authentication is only supported on local sockets
CONTEXT: line 86 of configuration file "/database/postgresql/pgsql/data/pg_hba.conf"
LOG: peer authentication is only supported on local sockets
CONTEXT: line 88 of configuration file "/database/postgresql/pgsql/data/pg_hba.conf"
FATAL: could not load pg_hba.conf
/database/postgresql/pgsql being where we have the database instead of the default /var…
As a test we attempted to restart postgresql setup similarly on a test server and saw exactly the same issue. The DBA at first blush found suggestion to use md5 startup rather than peer and it did start the DB but this morning we’re seeing some batch processes failing.
Line 86 and 88 of the configuration file are the “localhost” IPs for IPV4 and IPV6 respectively. This file hasn’t been changed recently but it has been some months since the DB was last started previously.
Has anyone seen the above messages and do you have any suggestions as to how to resolve so that we’re not changing the start method?
