Jeff,

It does mention that IBM sourced cheaper parts in its pc whereas
Digital Equipment Corporation, wanting control over quality, chose to
make every component in its pc itself.

DEC and IBM both suffered from not seeing the next generation of
smaller computers. DEC created the idea that a computer could be
interactive and smaller than the huge IBM behemoths by provide instant
execution rather than running executing batch jobs, which is somewhat
embodied in the unix heritage - the first unix was programmed on dec
pdps, I believe. They couldn't foresee the next smaller generation of
computers.
