Along the same lines of this device, I pulled a similar stunt using 'old 
school' tech.  In a math class in college, I set a wind up alarm clock 
to go off mid way through the class.  Stuck it in the garbage can and 
threw some papers on top of it.

The best part was the side effect of the actual ticking sound.  I didn't 
count on it, but it was faint and no one could tell where it was coming 
from.  Even when the alarm went off, it took the professor a while to 
locate it.
