Most certainly! My wife decided to accept the updater's offer of a
newer version to do an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.10 and it was a smoking
hole failure. I had no idea that it had happened until she asked me to
look at why her machine was acting so weird. It was "running" but it
was a mess.

Yup. Here's the appropriate info from Ubuntu:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes
In short, you can only upgrade to the "next" version. To go from 10.04 to
11.04, you need to upgrade to 10.10 first.
