I'm running Linux on fairly old machines including 400 MHz PII with 256 MB RAM. I'm doing this on purpose just to see how clutter the new software gets. So far my best fit and "out of box" system is Antix version 8.2 or 8.5. Puppy Linux is good also but because uses compressed root file system I think this feature eats some of your MHz. PuppyLinux 4.3.1 is the best balance between old PC and modern software. Good luck and post the results.
