[ale] access denied error

I am trying to log into a linux box (not sure what distro is) using putty
and ssh. When I enter the the login id given to me by my administrator I am
immediately getting "access denied" before I have a chance to enter my
password.

Can someone enlighten me as to what is going on with this?
