A little perspective:
In the Fall of 1973 gas suddenly jumped from .30 - .35 per gallon to $1.00
per gallon in less than two weeks. There was panic in the streets. Gas
would have to reach $4.85 per gallon today for the price to be the same in
constant dollars.

As a percentage of the total cost per gallon, the taxes on gasoline are
far less today than they were 38 years ago.
