I concur on the compatibility of Blender and Nvidia...I've had a good
experience with that as well (albeit running SuSE).

I concur. If you want to get stuff done, nvidia with their <grumble>
closed source drivers </grumble>. ATI's drivers are unstable and the
community driver are not quite mature enough yet.
Tools like Cinnellera and Blender are quite happy with nvidia hardware.
