[ale] grub 1.97 locks up laptop if != default

I finally got around to trying ubuntu (been SuSE since '01) so I installed
it over an old SuSE partition on my personal laptop but now grub locks it up
if I do anything but boot the default ubuntu.  simply down arrowing even
once, 'e' or 'c' & it locks up/has to be power cycled.  hit enter or let it
timeout & it boots ubuntu no prob.

anybody seen this before?
