This trick works for many Mazdas of that vintage.
Note all radio presets.
turn on the headlights.
With the headlights on, disconnect the battery. Negative pole is safer, 
but the positive side may be easier to reach. Wait 10 seconds and 
reconnect.
With any luck, the Check Engine Light will stay off, unless the engine is 
actually throwing a code, in which case it will come on again.
Remember, if the light comes on, the engine may need to be checked.  If 
the light is blinking, repairs need to be made immediately or engine 
damage is extremely likely.  That means stop the car and call a tow truck.
