I would offer only one suggestion after fighting reliability issues with my 
wife's Mac laptop:
Pay the money and get the three-year extended warranty.  You're going to 
need it.  In my limited experience, the hardware is not as reliable as I 
expect it do be -- certainly not in relation to the high cost.
The Mac is a well-designed piece of machinery and the software mostly "just 
works." But it only works the way the Mac engineers wanted it to work. If 
you don't like the way the GUI looks, tough; you can't do much about it.
